Aim

To provide an understanding of the use of injections in the management of joint and soft tissue pathology and advance the professional responsibility towards injection practice.

Objectives

  • Discuss reasons for joint and soft tissue injections, diagnosis of injury and avoiding pitfalls
  • Identify indications and contra-indications for joint and soft tissue injections, including when to refer
  • Outline the practical considerations including consent, equipment and complications
  • Demonstrate needle placement and correct technique for joint injections for shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee and hand

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Briefly outline the general musculoskeletal anatomy
  • Demonstrate soft tissue assessment and be able to evaluate the need for intervention with injection therapy
  • Understand and discuss the indications and contraindications for injections
  • Identify safety techniques involve in injection administration including correct equipment and complications that may occur
  • Demonstrate safe and accurate injections in joints and soft tissues, using anatomical simulation models
