Evening Masterclass: Concussion and Head Injuries in Sport

The master classes are a series of lectures from UK leading specialists in the field of Sports Medicine.  These will include short lectures, presentations and practical workshops.

Presentation 1: Head Injury in Sport

Learning Outcomes

Speaker: Mr Ashraf Abouharb - Consultant Neurosurgeon

Mr Abouharb is a full time adult consultant neurosurgeon in the NHS, based in the Royal Victoria Hospital regional neuroscience unit in Belfast Trust.  Mr Abouharb has been a core active member of the multidisciplinary teams locally and regionally including the regional NI neuro oncology group and the national British Neurovascular group.

Mr Abouharb has experience in the management and treatment of a range of general neurosurgical conditions including Hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, Head injuries, Peripheral nerves surgery and benign brain lesions including meningioma's. 

Presentation 2: Sports Concussion Assessment Tool (SCATS) - Recent Update and Changes

Speaker: Dr. Neil Heron - Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Neil Heron specialises in Sports and Exercise medicine and is a GP at the National Sports Injury Clinic.  As a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM, UK) and Member of the Royal College of General Practice (MRCGP), Dr. Heron received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow and has been Team Physician to various high-level sport teams, including the professional cycling team "Team Sky", Crusaders FC, Linfield FC and Northern Ireland international football teams.  He has experience of working at multi-sport games and worked as a medical officer for the World Police and Fire Games 2013, as well as the Giro d'Italia cycling road race and attended the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as a medical officer.

Presentation 3: The Sports Physiotherapist's Role in the Graduated Return to Play (GRTP) protocol following concussion in sport
